Doug Garrison

A member of Loose Cattle since 2019, Doug Garrison has been living and performing music in New Orleans since 1993 as drummer of the roots rock band The Iguanas, and working with many other bands in town, playing country, rock, traditional jazz, modern jazz, free improvised music, and klezmer.  He has made eight albums with The Iguanas, and logged many miles, performing just about everywhere in the US.  Prior to that he performed with rock icon Alex Chilton for roughly ten years, touring internationally, and recording five albums.  He is frequently called upon for a variety of New Orleans studio gigs, and has contributed to many movie and television soundtracks, on and off-screen.  As a free-lance drummer he often accompanies visiting artists, and has performed alongside such musical luminaries as Mose Allison, Milt Jackson, Anthony Braxton, and Gatemouth Brown.

Memphis, Tennessee and New Orleans, Louisiana have both nurtured him musically, and he has contributed greatly to those scenes as well. Raised in Memphis, his early musical experiences coincided with the Stax and Hi Records era, exposing him to mentors and associates from that scene.  He recorded and toured with Rufus and Carla Thomas, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns, and country music legend Charlie Rich.  He was also an integral part of the contemporary jazz scene in Memphis, working for a time with piano genius Phineas Newborn, Jr. and many others. The 80s in Memphis were a vibrant time for the legendary underground rock scene, and in addition to working with Alex Chilton, Doug performed and recorded with Tav Falco and Panther Burns, Linda Gail Lewis, Mudboy and the Neutrons, and Busta Cherry Jones.  And New Orleans has given him the unique opportunity to study and absorb the rich musical traditions in the place where modern drumming came to be.
